Gibsons Aikido and Systema
Aikido is a dynamic Japanese martial art and spiritual discipline
based on principles of natural movement and non-resistance.
It was developed
by Morihei Ueshiba, O’Sensei (1883-1969)
after a lifetime of mastering the martial
arts, most noteably Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu.
On a physical level, Aikido focuses on a centre to centre connection to diffuse, redirect, and control attacks for effective use in self defence situations.
As Aikido is a Budo or “martial way” it does
not engage in competitions or tournaments.
O’Sensei believed that the root of Budo was love and the unification of self with universal energy. He developed Aikido
not as a "fighting art" but as a way to unify body, mind, and spirit.
True Budo, as well
as technical systems of defence, are ultimately paths for the development
of personal understanding and the improvement of society.
As a satellite school of Aikido Eastside in Seattle Washington (George Ledyard Sensei), our curriculum
is largely based on the techniques and philosophy of the ASU organization (Saotome and Ikeda Shihans).
Our training includes empty hand techniques, multiple attackers, and a strong emphasis on weapons (namely the sword, stick, and knife).
